Marginalisation in the Work Place

Surveys have shown that over 60% of active Christians consider that Christians are being increasingly marginalised in the work place.

We want to hear from Christians about their experiences in the workplace. We will use this data to help make a fairer society.

Well done with your campaign. I will pass the details on to others. I have never felt discriminated against myself, for being a Christian and for openly saying so. Luckily, in my present job, my boss is a Christian which makes me feel at home.

The Christian Legal Centre that represented Duke Amachree has seen an increase in the numbers of Christians who seek advice because they have been discriminated against when they have practised their faith at work or in public. They currently have about 50 cases. Not all cases are in the public domain, but for more information on many current cases, please see the website: www.christianlegalcentre.com

As the news is heard today on Premier that a man working for Wandsworth Borough Council for 18 years has lost his appeal against gross misconduct for mentioning God and hope to a terminally ill woman during an interview. It was not the woman herself who complained. It appeared to me that this was the first Premier had heard of this case. Duke Ameche is being supported by a Christian legal team. The question l am left asking is; why don't large christian organisation get together as one huge support system instead of being fragmented into smaller fragmented cases of in justices against Christianity in the workplace and as is apparant that the UK Christians are being discriminated against from the media to the workplace and most places in between.

I do not broadcast my faith in the office, but they all know that I have gone from full time to part time so that I can study Theology at college, I have not experienced any discrimination. I consider that if you are committed to your employer and your work, employers are less likely to make comment on personal items such as faith.

I found that the Christian Fellowship meetings at my workplace were most uplifting and helped me identify with and strike up more supportive and fruitful relationships with fellow believers. Jesus's encouragement in Luke 11: 5-10 was much more my experience in allowing for facilities to be provided at work. However, I agree with Angela's comments and believe questioning PC is more the issue. We should be fighting for Truth and fairness for all. Jeff 'Lucas on Life' helps me get this in proportion.

I am recently retired and I can say that I have never felt discriminated against in the workplace either in the education sector or social services. I don't personally know any Christian in any part of the UK who has felt they've been discriminated against so I don't know where the 60% figure is from. The results of surveys depend to a very great extent on the wording of the questions! My understanding is that charities have to be very careful indeed not to indulge in political campaigning and I think that advert is definitely doubtful.

I work as a trained nurse, and I never feel afraid to voice that I am a christian.Have often told patients that I will pray for them. Some of my colleagues some times smile, whenever I say that I pray before coming on duty, and always do my devotion. One even comment about what my God did not do for her.If I could not speak about God in my work place I would be very unhappy.I do not go about shouting his praises but will tell them things that he has done and still doing for me.

My husband has experienced many examples of what we consider to be discrimination against Christianity in his workplace which is an NHS Trust in the mental health arena. This is not even solely in the sphere of patient contact which is understandably a sensitive area particularly with this client group, but even down to being told that he should not have told 'anyone' (including other staff members) that he was a Christian and such things as being prevented from escorting patients to the 'multi faith room' - something which he was singled out for, and did not apply to any other staff. In this particular Trust, the corporate line in the glossy brochures makes a big deal about catering for patients' spiritual needs but the reality on the ground is very different.

A school assembly was organised by a local policeman during which the theme of discrimination was presented. This looked good enough until staff and students were made to purchase specially made badges, with the money going to charity, declaring their promise not to discriminate against any groups of people. To me, this was reminiscent of the Jewish people being forced to wear the five-star David star to identify them out for persecution by others. I believe that anything done through calculated manipulation and control is operating in the spirit of the occult.

There is discrimination against the Christian faith from Government to the BBC, not only in the workplace. It can also be witnessed within the church itself when political correctness v Tuth of Scripture. If we change Scriptures to suit political expediency, then we must not be suprised maybe when politcal expediency changes Scriptures to suit their political agenda's in the work-place or anywhere else.

like Georgina, I've never felt marginalised in the workplace and am known to express my views on matters of faith when relevant - I do so freely. If I was ever marginalised though, I'd be more inclined to consider Jesus words in Luke 6:22-23 than to start a political campaign.

My experience in the workplace is very positive and on the whole always has been. I don't feel persecuted at all. I am obviously sensitive to peoples feelings so I don't labor the point of my faith and am conscious that certain opinions should not be discussed in the workplace. However, I am able to mention Jesus freely and often let people know that I am praying for them. It is important to let people know who you are as soon as possible, that way others know where you stand and are aware that you may not allow them to put you in compromising position. I have only ever felt respected.
